Overview
3DMolecular Symmetry operates in two different modes: the Symmetry
Elements mode and the Point Groups mode.
To toggle between these modes use the Program Mode Buttons in
the upper right part of the GUI.
The program's database is searchable through the Search Drop Menus located
below the Program Mode Buttons.
These menus function in two different ways depending on the program’s
mode: the user can search the database and list the molecules containing
a particular symmetry element or adopt a certain point group.
The Program Mode Buttons and the Search Drop Menus are inactive when
an animation of a symmetry operation is in progress or paused.

Program Mode Bullets

Click the Program Mode Buttons in the upper right part of
the GUI to toggle between the Symmetry Elements mode and the Point Groups
mode.
Toggling between these modes alters the functionality of
the Search Drop Menus and the classification of the listed molecules.
In addition, the functionality of the Molecule’s Element selection panel
also changes.
In the Point Groups mode the symmetry elements are displayed
as an hierarchical tree-menu classified by their class, while in the Symmetry
Elements mode they are displayed as a list.
When toggling from Symmetry Elements to Point Groups mode,
the search drop menus are set to the to the point group of the selected
molecule and the listed molecules are properly filtered.
When toggling from Point Groups to Symmetry Elements mode,
the search drop menus are set to "Any Element" and all the symmetry elements
of the selected molecule are listed

Symmetry Elements Drop Menus

Use the Symmetry Elements drop menus to search the molecules
that have a particular symmetry element.
From the first drop menu (Element Type) the four types
of symmetry elements can be selected, that is, axes, planes, improper
axes, center of inversion and an “Any Element” item.
In the second drop menu the specific symmetry
elements of each type can be selected.
Upon making a selection from either drop menu, the molecules
having the particular symmetry element are listed in the Molecules selection
panel.

Point Groups Drop Menus

Use the Point Groups drop menus to search for molecules that adopt a particular
point group.
In the first drop menu (Point Group Type) all the
types of point groups of chemical interest can be selected, as
well the “Any Point Group” item.
In the second drop menu the specific point
groups of each type can be selected.
Upon making a selection from either drop menu, the molecules adopting
the selected point group are listed in the Molecules selection
panel.
